‘WHAT IF I’M ALWAYS GONNA BE THIS WAY?’, the second full-length LP from Columbus, Ohio/Athens, Georgia-based queer indie rock band NOISE BENEATH THE FLOOR, will be released on all platforms on November 13th via the band’s own Modest Aeroplane Records.
The album sees the band build massively upon the foundation laid in their 2021 Chris Teti (TWIABP, Equipment) produced debut album A YEAR IN EXILE, while also adapting an updated soundscape, trading their debut’s clean production for a new pallet that splits the difference between punk rock and bedroom pop.
The process of making that debut album was the start of the band, but also almost ended it. Following the end of recording in August 2019, band leader Gavin McIntire (They/Them) struggled with depressive episodes and battled a year-long bout of writer’s block, compounded by the onset of the covid-19 pandemic and resulting lockdowns.
“I genuinely felt like I would never write again,” said Gavin retrospectively in an announcement to the band’s Instagram. The result of these struggles is the band’s most personal work, made only stronger by band member Jade Marié’s (She/Her) new role as co-lead vocalist, adding fresh perspective to each of the record’s tracks.
The band self-produced the album over four years between July 2020 and September 2024. This at-your-own-pace, DIY approach lead to the creation of over 100 demos before finally settling on the lean 8-song tracklisting of the resulting LP.
WHAT IF I’M ALWAYS GONNA BE THIS WAY? is currently available for pre-order on the band’s Bandcamp, with 2025 tour dates soon to be announced.
